Introduction to DIMM

DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module) is quite similar to SIMM (single in-line memory module). The difference is that the two ends of the gold finger of DIMM are not interoperable like SIMM. , They transmit signals independently, so they can meet the transmission needs of more data signals. The same uses DIMM, SDRAM interface and DDR memory interface are also slightly different, SDRAM DIMM is 168Pin DIMM structure, gold finger is 84Pin on each side, there are two bayonet on the gold finger, to avoid inserting the slot, the error will The memory is burned in the reverse direction; the DDR DIMM uses a 184Pin DIMM structure. There are 92Pin on each side of the gold finger, and there is only one bayonet on the gold finger. The difference in the number of bayonet is the most obvious difference between the two. The DDR2 DIMM is a 240pin DIMM structure. The gold finger has 120 Pins on each side. Like the DDR DIMM, there is only one bayonet on the gold finger, but the position of the bayonet is slightly different from the DDR DIMM. Therefore, the DDR memory cannot be inserted into the DDR2 DIMM. In the same way, DDR2 memory cannot be inserted into DDR DIMM, so on some motherboards with both DDR DIMM and DDR2 DIMM, there will be no problem of inserting the memory into the wrong slot.

The difference between UDIMM, RDIMM, SODIMM and LRDIMM

UDIMM, Unbuffered DIMM, is located in the desktop market. It means that the address and control signals do not pass through the buffer and do not make any timing adjustment (buffer delay is there), and directly reach the DRAM chip on the DIMM. The Registered memory module registers the address and control signals, and triggers the output when the next clock arrives.

RDIMM, Registered DIMM, is located in the workstation and server market. It means that the address and control signals are registered, and the clock is phase locked by the PLL. Compared with UDIMM, RDIMM is more stable and has larger capacity, but it lags one clock cycle for a single read and write access. Registered memory itself has two working modes, namely Registered mode and Buffered mode. When working on a motherboard that supports the Registered working mode, the Registered memory works in the Registered mode. At this time, the address signal and control signal on the motherboard will reach the DIMM one clock cycle before the data signal, and will stay in the clock after being sent to the Register chip Cycle, and then output from Register on the rising edge of the next clock signal, along with the data signal that arrives at the DIMM from the motherboard at the same time is transferred to SDRAM. When the Registered memory works on an ordinary motherboard, it is in the Buffered working mode. At this time, all the signals basically reach the DIMM at the same time and are simultaneously transmitted to the SDRAM. The Register chip is functionally equivalent to a simple Buffer at this time. The input to output is straight-through, and it simply plays the role of improving address signals and control signals. The timing is the same as that of Unbuffered memory. Compared with other memory modules, Registered DIMM adds two key devices, PLL and register.

SODIMM, Small Outline DIMM are positioned in the notebook market. Both UDIMM and RDIMM are subordinate to DIMM, the length of the memory module, etc., including the signal distribution of the golden finger are the same. The SODIMM can be understood as a smaller memory module.

LRDIMM, Load-Reduced DIMM, does not use more complicated registers, but uses simple buffering. Buffering reduces the electrical load on the lower motherboard, but has almost no impact on energy and memory performance. Unlike RDIMM and LRDIMM, server manufacturers put more modules on each memory channel. Therefore, the LRDIMM design can include large volume system memory without incurring high latency costs.
