Siemens to acquire Sarokal Test Systems to further expand IC business

Siemens will leverage its unique technology and expertise in the 5G market segment to enhance integrated circuit (IC) advantages and global digital strategies.

Sarokal's technology, combined with the Veloce® hardware accelerator, allows customers to perform 4G and 5G design verification during front-end and back-end testing.

Siemens announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire Sarokal Test Systems Oy in Oulu, Finland, a provider of innovative test solutions for predecessors. The forward network consists of a link between a centralized radio controller and a radio frequency unit (or antenna mast) located at the "edge" of the cellular network. From early design stages to implementation and field testing, chipset vendors, predecessor device manufacturers and telecom operators use Sarokal products to develop, test and validate their 4G and 5G network devices.

Siemens to acquire Sarokal Test Systems to further expand IC business

“The acquisition of Sarokal reflects our commitment to the EDA and IC industries,” said Tony Hemmelgarn, President and CEO of Siemens PLM Software. “After the acquisition of Mentor Graphics, we continue to leverage Mentor's existing strengths to make strategic investments that will enable Siemens to extend its products to the IC industry.”

Sarokal's products can be used to test transmission specifications across multiple domains. Its test product line is designed for the entire development and maintenance process for cellular and wireline transmission system testing. This technology is designed to detect radio frequency (RF) problems. With a vision for 5G testing requirements, Sarokal created test models for virtual (digital) environments and physical test environments from the start.

“Since its inception, Sarokal has been at the forefront of 5G specification development and has been leading the requirements of the predecessor network. The 5G specification aims to significantly improve the performance of mobile broadband, network operations and Internet of Things (IoT) communications, which requires new Test method," said Sarokal CEO Harri Valasma. “Joining Siemens and integrating our technology into the Veloce hardware accelerated simulation platform, we will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the adoption of 5G technology by early adopters and stay ahead of this rapidly evolving market segment.”

“The introduction of Sarokal's unique pre-test expertise will create unique advantages for our Veloce hardware accelerator customers,” said Mentor, a vice president and general manager of hardware acceleration simulation at Siemens Business, Eric Selosse. "Sarokal's tester technology combined with Mentor's Veloce hardware accelerated simulation platform will enable customers to 'left shift' verification of 4G and 5G designs for accurate and timely front-end and back-end testing."

The transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018, subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
