Six consecutive quarters of decline, EDA industry revenue has achieved continuous growth
According to the latest statistics of the EDA Alliance (EDA ConsorTIum, EDAC), EDA industry revenue continued to grow in the third quarter of 2009, ending the longest period of continuous industry decline since 1997.
According to the data provided by the EDAC market statistics service, EDA industry revenue in the third quarter of 2009 totaled nearly US $ 1.17 billion, an increase of 3.8% from the second quarter of 2009, but the annual growth rate compared with the third quarter of 2008 still declined 7.2%; and the four-quarter moving average of EDAC also declined by 13.1%.
"This is the first time we have seen continuous growth for a period of time, which is good news;" said Walden Rhines, chairman of EDAC, chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics, "but there is still some distance to return to the previous level." EDA Industrial revenue has declined for six consecutive quarters since the first quarter of 2008. This is the longest decline since EDAC statistics since 1997.
Almost all EDA product category revenue grew in the third quarter of 2009 compared with the second quarter, except for IC physical design and verification tools (IC physical design and verificaTIon), which declined 4% in the third quarter of 2009. Markets including PCB design tools, semiconductor IP, and design services are the most prominent in quarterly growth.
However, compared with the data in the third quarter of 2008, each product category market is still in decline, and the performance of the regional markets is also the same, only the Asia-Pacific market revenue increased by 1.6% year-on-year.
Rhines said that continuous quarterly growth may mean that the current economic cycle continues to defy the traditional semiconductor / EDA cycle; usually the EDA industry revenue will continue to grow one year after the decline of the semiconductor industry, and the recovery of the EDA industry The speed will be about a year later than the semiconductor industry, but this time the recovery of the EDA industry seems to be only half a year later.
However, Rhines emphasized that he was only speculating. Perhaps this industry recession is different from the recovery cycle, just because the semiconductor industry experienced the most different recession in history. The market fell sharply at the end of 2008, but it felt obvious signs of recovery in early 2009.
He said that in view of the current trend, EDA industry revenue should continue to maintain continuous growth; but he also emphasized that the performance of the EDA industry and the semiconductor industry's R & D strategy and corporate executives' views on the future market are closely related, and IC Manufacturers are still uncertain about the economic situation and have not resumed recruiting employees.
According to EDAC statistics, the number of employees of EDA vendors in the third quarter of 2009 was approximately 25,942, which was a decrease of 7.9% from the same period in 2008 and a decrease of 1.4 from the second quarter of 2009.
