Renishaw's new raster is brave in space

Renishaw's products, the world's measurement specialist, are on the ground for the first time, marking a new milestone in their technology applications. On April 3, 2014, the European Space Agency launched the Sentinel-1A satellite at the European Space Base in Kourou, French Guiana, as part of a revolutionary intersatellite laser communication system. In part, the satellite's advanced optical communication payload (OCP) uses Renishaw's latest space-grade grating technology.

OCP provides optical communication links from LEO to geosynchronous orbit (GEO) through a pair of laser communication terminals (LCT) at Tesat-Spacecom (Tesat), a space communications company in Backnang, Germany. GEO LCT is currently installed on the European Space Agency's AlphaSat.


The environment in space is extremely harsh, and the performance requirements for gratings far exceed the normal operating limits. Because on-orbit repairs are expensive and unaffordable, components suitable for space applications must also have exceptional reliability. Given all of these factors, the process of selecting qualified technology becomes extremely complex and difficult. As a world leader in precision engineering technology, Renishaw has successfully responded to the ultimate challenge of space applications with its outstanding expertise.


Tesat's second-generation LCT's coarse aiming mechanism (CPA) (actually a telescope with coherent receiver and transmitter hardware) requires a new type of circular grating. Renishaw has partnered with Tesat to develop space-grade gratings. Many of the core technologies of this product come from Renishaw's proven and reliable TONiC? grating series. It can withstand operating temperatures from -40 ° C to +80 ° C, solar / cosmic ray impact, and the high mechanical loads required for rocket launches. Anti-radiation enhancement technology combined with Renishaw's proven optical inspection principle enables the grating to provide up to 15 years of service in geosynchronous orbit (GEO) environments.

The advanced space-grade grating developed by Renishaw and Tesat is mounted on the two rotary axes of the CPA and will be integrated into the Sentinel, the European Data Relay Satellite EDRS-A and the EDRS-C. Many future space stations are on the LCT. The grating system consists of a stainless steel ring engraved with a scale on the cylinder and a specially adapted readhead.


The IN-TRAC? reference zero is directly embedded in the incremental channel in an arrangement such that the distance between any two reference zeros is different. This means that the absolute position can be determined by simply rotating the grating a little. Another advantage of this space-grade grating is that there is no contact between the ring and the static readhead, so there is no friction, which avoids hysteresis errors and potential wear and does not require lubrication. The resolution of the system is less than 0.5 rad, the short-range error is <0.5 rad, and the long-distance error is <5 rad.

According to the German Parliament's legislation on TESAT's 50YH0932 project framework (subcontractor is Renishaw), the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology on behalf of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) has funded the development of this product.
