The Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) VR headsets have been on the market for less than five months, but they've already sparked a lot of discussion. Microsoft's focus on affordability, easy setup, and compatibility with budget-friendly PCs has positioned WMR as a strong contender in the VR space, making it easier for the platform to gain traction in the consumer market.
However, the market hasn't responded as strongly as expected. Many OEM manufacturers are producing devices that look almost identical, which may be confusing for consumers. According to Steam hardware surveys, Microsoft’s share on the platform has remained relatively low—only around 5%—even after an initial spike in the first few months. This suggests that WMR is still struggling to stand out in a crowded field.
In fact, several retailers have started to pull back from WMR. For example, HP’s WMR headset, originally priced at $499, can now be found on Amazon for just $222, while the Vizio VR headset, which once cost $450, is now available for only $253. Meanwhile, The Register recently reported that Currys, the UK’s largest electronics retailer, has removed WMR headsets from its shelves, while continuing to stock both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.
Developers also seem unimpressed with the WMR ecosystem. According to reports, no one has asked them to bring their content to the platform. Instead, many are focusing on more established systems like the Oculus Go, which offers a more accessible and mobile-friendly experience. One developer told The Register:
“There’s no issue with porting our content to WMR, but no one has even reached out to us. There are already two major players in the market—Oculus and Vive—and many new titles are moving toward mobile VR and affordable platforms like the Oculus Go.â€
So why is WMR not taking off? Several factors could be at play. The name itself is confusing, and the platform lacks a clear unique selling point. It entered the market later than its competitors and doesn’t yet have a robust library of games or apps. Even though WMR requires lower-end hardware, it might still be too expensive or complex for casual users who are using older laptops.
Despite these challenges, it seems unlikely that any of these issues will be resolved in the near future. As the VR market continues to evolve, WMR will need to find a way to differentiate itself if it wants to capture a larger share of the growing industry.
