The Samsung Gear VR experience is now available for customers to explore in select Barneys New York stores. As a high-end fashion retailer, Barneys has long been known for curating the most sought-after collections of the season. But with the launch of the Barneys Spring Collection, the brand partnered with Mantle to push creative boundaries by merging fashion, modern dance, and immersive technology into an unforgettable experience.
On March 6th, Mantle unveiled an 11-minute VR short film inside Barneys locations, showcasing the work of four contemporary designers—Prabal Gurung, Row, Rick Owens, Loewe, and Craig Green. This immersive film was created by husband-and-wife duo Theo and Cynthia Stanley and is available to view through Samsung Gear VR headsets.
Each segment of the VR experience highlights a unique aspect of the human mind—power, ethereal beauty, enchantment, and cleansing. At Barneys’ flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York, the dancers' outfits are displayed in the window, offering a visual preview of the performance.
The experience attracted talented dancers from the renowned Martha Graham Dance Company, some of whom had worked directly under Martha Graham herself. Matthew Mazzucca, Barneys’ creative director, shared that while the dancers performed beautifully in their 70s, traditional stage performances can be more restrictive. “Video allows us to focus on age, experience, athleticism, and diversity of skill, but repeated performances come with limitations,†he explained.
The VR film is shot in 360 degrees, placing the viewer right in the center of the action. Dancers appear to look directly at the audience, creating a deeply personal connection. “Every element of this experience is designed to foster intimacy between the dancer and the viewer,†Mazzucca said. “Because it’s immersive, people can choose when and where to watch it. Different audiences will have different experiences, and that’s what makes it exciting.â€
Fashion retailers are increasingly using VR and AR to enhance in-store experiences. From TopShop allowing customers to try on virtual clothes to HoloLens-enabled fitting rooms, the retail landscape is evolving rapidly. Now, Barneys’ VR experience is also available as 360° videos on Samsung Gear VR, making it accessible beyond physical stores.
Whether you're a fashion enthusiast or a tech lover, this blend of art and innovation offers a fresh perspective on how we engage with both design and movement. It's a glimpse into the future of retail—one where storytelling, creativity, and technology come together seamlessly.
