ON Semiconductor Introduces Two New Power Management ICs

ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) has introduced two new power management ICs (PMICs) for portable electronic devices using battery-powered systems such as smart phones, tablets, digital cameras, GPS and Other portable electronic products provide optimal design. The NCP6924 and NCP6914 use the latest power management technology to provide optimized system efficiency and extend battery life.

The NCP6924 integrates two energy-efficient 800mA (mA), 3MHz (MHz) DC-DC buck converters and four low dropout (LDO) regulators while the quiescent current amounts to only 105μA (μA) ). The NCP6914 integrates a single, energy-efficient 800 mA, 3 MHz DC-DC buck converter and four LDO regulators to provide low quiescent current of only 72μA. Both devices have five and six voltage rails to provide power in a perfect size for mixed-signal modules such as cameras, or to complement the application processor for power distribution with minimal monitoring.

Thibault Kassir, director of ON Semiconductor's interface and power products, said: "The NCP6924 and NCP6914 are part of ON Semiconductor's ultra-compact PMIC family, providing design engineers with flexibility and performance as an ideal power distribution solution for portable applications. Both devices provide multiple power distribution strings to save board space and allow power distribution throughout the system at higher power density to help solve thermal challenges."

The new device provides programming flexibility through a 400 kHz/3.4 MHz I2C interface, controlling start-up power sequencing, enabling and disabling output power, and controlling individual active output discharges. The dynamic voltage adjustment function of the DC-DC converter allows the system to adjust the core or IO voltage according to the load conditions, such as when the system enters sleep mode. Furthermore, the on-board LDO regulator can be directly powered by one of the integrated DC-DC converters, significantly reducing overall power supply losses.

The output voltage of the DC-DC converter is programmable from 0.6 volts (V) to 3.3 V (12.5 mV intervals) while the LDO regulator is from 1.0 V to 3.3 V (50 mV intervals). Dedicated output normal indication and interrupt pins and registers form a complete feature set, providing the necessary monitoring to report power failure events.

Package and Price Both devices are available in 2.45 mm x 2.05 mm and 1.76 mm x 2.05 mm Wafer-Level Chip-Scale Packages (WLCSP) with 0.4 mm pin pitch. The NCP6924 is priced at $1.85 each for 10,000 tablets in a batch, and the NCP6914 is priced at $1.35 for 10,000 tablets in a batch.
