Three stories of Apple Jobs

In the global scientific community, I only have one idol. He is not Bill Gates, but Steven Jobs. If Gates makes Microsoft a legend, then Jobs himself is a legend. He created the Apple computer and led the trend of computer fashion; he founded Pixar, which swayed the entertainment industry; he created the iPod and influenced the lifestyle of more than one generation. It can even be said that without him, there is no new song recommendation in the upper left corner of my blog, because those new songs are heard in the car by car audio after I download it to the iPod.

Just two days ago, one of my business school classmates sent me a speech from Steve Jobs at the Stanford University graduation ceremony last year. She said in the mail that if you haven't seen this speech yet, you should watch it because it should not be missed. After I saw it, I very much agreed with her statement. I don't think you should miss it.

The following is an excerpt from the original text of the speech.

Today I am very honored to attend your graduation ceremony. I have never graduated from college, so today should be my closest to the graduation ceremony. Today I just want to tell you three real stories in my life. Nothing more, there are no long stories, just three stories.

The first story is about connecting points into lines.

When I was seventeen, I entered college. At the time, I was naive and chose a school that was almost as expensive as Stanford University. When the workers' parents raised all their savings, they paid me college tuition. After reading it for six months, I didn't see any significance in going to school. I don't know what I want to do in my life, and I don't know if the university can help me figure out what I want to do. So, I decided to drop out. When I made this decision, I still had some drumming in my heart, but now I look back, it is one of the best decisions I have made in my life. From the moment I drop out of school, I can stop picking up the compulsory courses that I have no interest in, and start to listen to some lesson that seems more interesting to me.

At that time, the calligraphy class at my school was probably the best in the country. All the bulletin boards on campus and the words on each drawer label are very beautiful. I didn't have to go to class after I dropped out of school, so I decided to choose a calligraphy class and learn how to write good words.

At that time, I did not expect calligraphy to have any practical value in later life. However, ten years later, when we designed the first Macintosh computer, the calligraphy we used to learn came to me. So, we designed all of these things into the computer. This is the first computer with such a beautiful text layout. If I had chosen such a course in college, the Macintosh computer would never have a lot of typographical fonts or a reasonable spacing. If I didn't drop out of school, I wouldn't happen to pick that calligraphy class. Of course, I can't extend the point at the time in the university and connect it into a line; but now I look back and see that line is very clear.

It is also impossible for you to connect the line leading to the future from this point. Only when you look back, will you find that these past points have actually drawn that line. So, believe that every point will be connected sooner or later.

The second story is about likes and dislikes and gains and losses.

Fortunately, I found out what I like to do when I was very young. I started Apple at the age of 20 and Woz in my parents' garage. We worked very hard. Ten years later, Apple grew from two people in the garage to a large company with a market value of $2 billion and more than 4,000 employees. In the year before, we just launched our Macintosh computer, which I just passed. Later, I was fired. How can you be dismissed by your own company? That's it. As Apple grows bigger, we hire someone I think is very talented to work with me to manage the company. In the first year or so, everything went smoothly. However, the two sides began to disagree on the company's prospects. Finally, we turned against each other. At this time, the board stood on his side, so at the age of 30, I left the company, and the incident was full of trouble. I have lost my entire life after I became an adult, which made me feel hard.

For a few months, I really don't know what to do. This failure made a lot of noise, I even thought about fleeing Silicon Valley. But gradually, I started to have an idea - I still love what I have done in the past. These turmoil in Apple did not change this at all. So I decided to start from scratch.

Although I didn't realize it at the time, it turned out that being fired by Apple was the best thing I encountered in my life. Despite the uncertain future, the relaxed feeling from the beginning replaced the heavy feeling of success. This made me one of the most creative periods of my life.

In the next five years, I opened a company called NeXT and a company called Pixar. I also fell in love with a great woman and later married her. Pixar has launched the world's first computer-generated animated cartoon, Toy Story, which is now the most successful animation studio in the world. After the reincarnation of the world, after Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple. The technology we developed at NeXT became the core of Apple's re-emergence. I and Laurena have also established a happy family.

I am convinced that this will never happen if it is not dismissed by Apple. This is a bitter medicine, but I think that bitter medicine is good for the disease. Sometimes life will give you a head, but don't be discouraged. I firmly believe that the only force that keeps me going forward is that I love what I do. So, you must know what you like, when you choose your lover, and the same when you choose to work. Work will be a large part of life, and the only way to make yourself truly satisfied is to do what you think is meaningful work; the only way to do meaningful work is to love your work. If you haven't found what you like, then keep looking for it and don't rush to make a decision. Just like everything you have to do with your feelings, once you find something you like, you will tell you.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17 years old, I read this passage. The general idea is: "If you treat each day as the last day of your life, one day your hypothesis will become a reality." I remember this sentence. Since then, 33 years have passed, and I ask myself every morning in the mirror: "If today is the last day of my life, will I still do what I want to do today?" If I have answered many days It’s all “no”, I know I should have changed.

About a year ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. At 7:30 in the morning, I did a scan and the results clearly showed that I had a tumor on my pancreas, but I didn't know what the pancreas was! The doctor told me that it is almost certain that this is an incurable malignant tumor. I can live for up to 3 to 6 months.

I think about the diagnosis all day long. In the evening, I did a tissue biopsy. They passed an endoscope through the throat into my intestines and took some tissue from the tumor on the pancreas with a needle. I used an anesthetic at the time, and the wife who accompanied me later told me that the doctor called after seeing the cells in the microscope. It turned out to be a rare malignant tumor that can be cured by surgery. I have had an operation and it is alright now.

This is the closest I have to Death, and I hope it will be the most recent in the next few decades. With this experience, now I can talk more about death with you, that is: no one wants to die. Even those who want to go to heaven will not be willing to die in order to enter heaven. However, death is our common destination, no one can get rid of it. We are destined to die, because death is probably the best invention of life. It promotes the new generation of life. Now, you are new, but in the near future, you will gradually become old and will be eliminated.

Your time is limited, so don't live according to the wishes of others. This is a waste of time. Don't let the noise of others' opinions overwhelm your own voice. The most important thing is to have the courage to follow your own feelings and intuition. In any case, feelings and intuition have long known what kind of person you want to be, and the rest are not important.
