A new smartphone designed specifically for securing cryptocurrencies was unveiled on Tuesday at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. The device, called the SIKURPhone, was developed by German cybersecurity company Sikur and is priced at $799. This phone features a 5.5-inch HD display and a 13-megapixel rear camera, but its standout feature is its built-in cryptocurrency wallet.
The SIKURPhone comes with a secure software wallet that allows users to store and manage their digital assets safely. With increasing concerns about the security of crypto transactions, this device aims to provide a more reliable solution. Recently, hackers stole over $500 million worth of cryptocurrencies from Japan's Coincheck exchange, highlighting the growing need for better security measures.
According to data from CoinMarketCap.com, the total market value of cryptocurrencies has surged to over $4.6 billion, up from just $21.4 billion a year earlier. In response to these challenges, Sikur invited ethical hackers to test the security of the SIKURPhone. After two months of intensive testing, none of the hackers were able to breach the system or access any user data.
“By the end of Q2 2018, we plan to launch an encrypted wallet platform that will allow customers to use the wallet beyond the SIKURPhone itself,†said Cristiano Lop, CEO of Sikur, in an interview with CNBC. “This means users can securely store their cryptocurrencies using a physical device.â€
Pre-orders for the SIKURPhone will open on February 27, with the first shipments expected in August 2018. Only 20,000 units will be available at the initial price of $799, making it a limited edition release. As the crypto space continues to grow, devices like the SIKURPhone could play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of digital assets.
