Korean company develops fabric OLED display technology and truly wearable technology

With the development of wearable technology, more and more wearable devices that can synchronize mobile phone information notifications have come out, but the form has not escaped certain limitations and is not flexible enough. Under the leadership of Professor Chi Kyung-chul, the R&D team succeeded in integrating OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays on textile substrates. At this stage, the R&D team must start producing a fabric that meets the requirements. Fabrics using this technology can be made into new smart wearable devices such as smart badges, smart belts, and smart sleeves.

The research team solved this problem through a flattening process. They make a flat fabric like a glass plate without losing the flexibility of the textile. This flat textile is more flexible than a plastic substrate of the same thickness. On this basis, the team successfully formed OLEDs on textiles by vacuum thermal deposition. They used MulTI-layer thin film encapsulation technology to prevent moisture and oxygen from penetrating into the OLED. Studies have found that textile OLEDs developed in this manner have a lifetime of more than 1000 hours and an idle life of more than 3,500 hours.

The results were published as a cover on the November 16th issue of Advanced Electronic Materials (International Academic Journal of the Nanoelectronics Division).

In order to complete the development of new smart wearable devices, the research team still needs to find better fabrics. These fabrics must have a smooth, fine surface with good ventilation and heat dissipation. And although the fabric has a built-in display screen, it must not affect its soft, comfortable characteristics.
