STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global leader in semiconductor technology, has introduced the world’s first multi-frequency satellite navigation receiver chip designed specifically for safety-critical automotive systems and high-precision positioning applications such as PPP (Precision Point Positioning) and RTK (Real-Time Kinematic). This breakthrough aims to enhance driving safety by delivering centimeter-level accuracy, which is essential for autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Traditional car navigation systems typically rely on single-frequency GNSS receivers, offering meter-level accuracy. However, as autonomous driving becomes more prevalent, the demand for higher precision has increased. Systems like lane departure warning (LDW), adaptive cruise control (ACC), and automatic parking require accurate positioning that aligns with data from cameras, radars, and lidars. Future fully autonomous vehicles will also depend on precise location data to operate safely.
The Teseo APP, an automotive-grade GNSS receiver, tracks multiple Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and receives at least two frequencies from each system—unlike
other products that only support one frequency. This enables faster convergence and more accurate positioning globally, supporting both PPP and RTK algorithms. The chip also features integrity monitoring, ensuring that any drop in accuracy triggers an immediate alert. This capability helps meet strict automotive safety standards like ISO 26262 and ASIL levels.
In addition to precision, the Teseo APP includes a secure microcontroller for trusted boot and data verification, protecting sensitive information from potential threats. For non-safety-critical applications, ST also offers the Teseo V chip, which provides multi-frequency positioning without integrity guarantees.
Antonio Radaelli, Director of Information and Entertainment at STMicroelectronics, stated, “Our latest Teseo APP GNSS chip combines high precision with unique integrity monitoring, making autonomous driving safer, smoother, and more reliable.â€
Currently, the Teseo APP is being sampled by major customers developing autonomous systems, with initial installations expected in premium models launched in 2020 and 2021. The chip was showcased at the 2018 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Traditionally, GNSS-based systems used single-frequency receivers, limiting accuracy due to environmental factors like multipath and ionospheric delays. The Teseo APP addresses this by tracking multiple signals across various bands, including GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou, QZSS, and IRNSS, and incorporating PPP correction data for decimeter-level accuracy. It also utilizes the Galileo E6 signal to eliminate common errors.
Previously, high-precision GNSS was limited to commercial and government use. Other methods, like differential systems or dense reference networks, are costly and less efficient. The Teseo chip offers a cost-effective, high-precision solution that improves reliability and reduces convergence time, making it ideal for real-time autonomous driving applications.
