Marvell smart home perspective: OTT content transmission and interaction on the home network

Rayong: Dear experts and leaders, hello everyone, I am Rayong from Marvell. Just now, many colleagues have shared the operation of content on the entire OTT business, including some experience in backbone network transmission. Today I mainly want to share with you about the transmission of OTT content in the home network, and I will use Google as an example to share some information with you from the perspective of multi-screen interaction.

First of all, let me share with you the current development trend of OTT smart terminals. First of all, you will pay more attention to the function of video post-processing, because there are some professional functions that will perform color compensation. In addition, with regard to video overlay, a box product recently released by a large company in China has brought this overlay, known as the DVB + OTT solution. In fact, as far as we Marvell is concerned, a dual-core Android chip launched at the end of the previous year already supports this feature. From an application point of view, although the OTT terminal has the particularity of the video terminal, it is very similar to the chip competition of mobile phones, basically from single core to dual core to quad core, and the chip processing capacity is gradually improving. In addition, after all, OTT is a large-screen business, and the requirements for GPU display including large pixel fill rate are also very high. Another point is the security solution. We Marvell cooperates with some operators abroad and Google and at home. From our point of view, security is really a very important issue, including some security certifications. Independent security module to solve.

Another important part is interconnection, which is what I want to discuss with you today. I remember talking a lot to you when I was in Shenzhen last year, but this year, with the launch of Google Chromecast, the market's hot spots have changed again. Another part is about the stable transmission of video in the home network. In fact, sometimes this is a spiraling process, from the original wired to wireless, and now I found that some problems still need to be returned to wired to solve, this part I Will introduce the latest technology in this area. Now more and more mobile phones are beginning to apply these technologies. I believe the next wave is in the set-top box.

In fact, with the development of broadband in China, in terms of the development of FTTH and fiber-to-the-home services, the real bottleneck of broadband high-definition video services is not the access network, but some problems in indoor transmission. Like the layout of a typical Chinese home, due to fiber damage or household line problems, the home gateway will be deployed at the door, a certain distance away from the terminal in the living room, and sometimes there will be a problem of passing through the wall. The situation is generally with the help of WiFi. For standard definition, the technical problems are not big now, but for high-definition video, sometimes there will be mosaics when people pass by, which is not so stable. At this time, high-definition video can be transmitted with the help of the wired media in the home, especially the ubiquitous power line. For example, the network port installed under the home gateway will have an adapter, and two adapters will be deployed in the other two locations. One of the adapters is directly connected to the AP, and the other adapter is connected to the home set-top box, so that the power line in the home can be used to provide very stable high-definition transmission.

There will also be some PLC technology, but the main discussion here is G.hn. The original intent of this standard is the wired media at home, including high-definition transmission through power lines, telephone lines, and TV lines, especially power lines are the most widely used scenarios. Compared with other previous power line transmission technologies, G.hn has some obvious advantages, including technical support like MIMO, which can provide more stable and high-definition connection, including the suppression of neighbor network noise. Generally speaking, when you and your neighbors are using power line transmission at the same time, there will be interference, but there is a very complex and mature mechanism in G.hn to minimize the impact of noise. Compared with other previous standards, one of the biggest advantages is openness and interoperability. Because it is an ITU standard, compliance will be very good. For example, China Telecom has been organizing interoperability since the previous year. Basically, the four chip manufacturers have fully realized the standard interoperability. The products you can get now can be interoperated between two pairs without any operation. This is much better than previous products, and it also gives users flexible choices, including that operators can avoid many risks in future purchases.

In addition, there is a lot of noise and signal attenuation in the home network. In this case, if high bandwidth cannot be maintained in a high-noise environment, there is no way to cope with the needs of video streaming or Internet access. G.hn's attenuation in China Telecom's actual measurement can meet the needs of more than 99% of households. Now some of China Telecom's designated manufacturers are doing the conversion module on the AC / DC conversion power supply. Another solution is to directly make the module in the set-top box, which is a fully integrated solution. In fact, when it is actually deployed, whether it is a consumer or an operator, it is necessary to choose the corresponding product form according to their own needs. It is enough to use an independent adapter for a large number of users. For some new users, you can directly put the G.hn module into it, which is also a way to choose. Marvell is now a leading G.hn chip provider, and we provide our solutions in a variety of scenarios. Both domestic and foreign, are using our chips as independent adapters.

I just introduced it as a home network content transmission. The next topic I want to talk about is interaction. In fact, we have been talking about multi-screen interaction for a long time, and there are various ways. Although there are many ways, we have never seen a very well-selling and very mature product that really allows mobile phones and TVs to interact, but this year after Google ’s product was released, it really did this. I think everyone has heard of Chromecast, which is actually a small video receiving device.

In fact, for Chromecast, there are two ways to interact. One is based on Google ’s own browser to do mirror-like applications, but there are not many such applications. The other is to interact with the phone and tablet. Chromecast does not have a remote control. All the control is done on the phone and tablet, so this model of Chromecast is actually very simple.

We briefly introduce Chromecast, first of all, it is very simple and easy to use, the function is very specific. Chromecast is used for high-definition video playback, the purpose is to meet the needs of some users want to watch high-definition video through the user's simplest operation, which does not have complicated functions, in this case is very convenient for users. Another point is that Google ’s market positioning is very accurate, and the aim is for users who want to watch high-definition video, especially in the United States. We Marvell has always been known for its processing power. Our domestic chips like Lenovo Smart TV are also used by our chip, which can play very complex 3D games. However, Google does not consider this issue when making this product, that is, making a high-definition video player that interacts through mobile phones, which meets the needs of many American users. Many users just want to watch videos instead of other things, so Chromecast positioning is very accurate.

Another point is that Chromecast has a very high-quality video experience. Because in fact, Google has very high requirements for video experience, Google also allows users to really achieve a very high-quality video experience through this high requirement. In addition, Google's ecological environment also provides full support, and the price is also very attractive. In North America, the box products are 79, 99 or even 199 US dollars, and the price of Chromecast 35 US dollars is very attractive in certain regions. Therefore, in all aspects, Chromecast has indeed achieved good results.

So I want to share some experience with you through these. We may not necessarily apply 100%, but some open things can be used for reference. On the other hand, we will talk about positioning when we are making terminals. In fact, for chip platforms, we hope that the products you make are stronger and stronger, but in fact different products will have different market positioning. For example, some users like very powerful functions, and really use the box as the center of home entertainment. Just like we also have a suitable chip to be launched next year, its GPU capability will exceed XBOX. There are also some users whose needs are more specific. We need to find a target when doing product design.

For Marvell, looking purely from a single chip solution, it is far from enough to meet the requirements of all complex business environments, so we are also constantly improving, including transmission and so on. Many people have asked me, is there such a big throughput of 11ac? In fact, one advantage of 11ac's large throughput is that the wireless interface time is greatly shortened, saving power, and the probability of mutual interference will decrease. This is a great advantage of 11ac. Anyway, basically we can think of AC as a good trend for WiFi. For Marvell, our products will be selected by leading manufacturers, not just because of the overall performance, we have a diversified product line.
