Recently, the British Columbia Association of Science and Technology (BCAST) made a significant announcement: it will open a new innovation hub in Vancouver called “The Cube.†This state-of-the-art facility will focus on virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), offering a dynamic space for creators, developers, and entrepreneurs to innovate and grow.
The Cube is designed not just as an office space, but as a collaborative environment where startups, tech enthusiasts, and industry professionals can connect, share ideas, and develop cutting-edge technologies. Spanning 6,000 square feet (around 557 square meters), the center will provide early-stage companies with access to advanced tools, mentorship programs, and educational workshops to help them scale up effectively.
Bill Tam, CEO of BCAST, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “By equipping entrepreneurs with the right resources, we aim to accelerate the growth of AR, VR, and MR in British Columbia. We want The Cube to become one of the leading tech ecosystems in the region, driving innovation and strengthening our global reputation.â€
The project has already attracted strong support from major players in the tech industry. Key sponsors include the National Research Council of Canada, Microsoft, AMPD Games Technology, Finger Food Studios, Archiact, and Work at Play. These partnerships have enabled the center to offer a fully equipped workspace with 50 workstations, private offices, high-end VR/AR equipment, and a custom green screen room ideal for mixed reality content creation.
Edoardo De Martin, General Manager of Microsoft Vancouver, shared his vision for the future of immersive technologies, saying, “We believe that AR, VR, and MR will experience explosive growth in the coming years. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize traditional industries across BC, from healthcare to education and beyond.â€
