Through the past few weeks of after-sales support and customer consultations, we've gained a better understanding of some common concerns. Many customers are unsure about how to properly preserve laboratory media, and some have even reached out directly for clarification. Based on our experience, we'd like to share some key guidelines to help you maintain the quality and effectiveness of your media:
1. After sterilization, the medium should be removed immediately from the autoclave. Leaving it in high-pressure conditions may compromise its quality. Once prepared, store it at 2–25°C, away from direct light.
2. Commercial media should be stored according to the instructions provided. Make sure to label each batch with the batch number, manufacturing date, expiration date, and any relevant characteristics. Proper storage and transport conditions are essential to reduce moisture loss and provide mechanical protection.
3. Always store the medium in a sealed container to prevent moisture loss and extend its shelf life.
4. For prepared media, keep it in a cool, dark place between 2–25°C. If stored in an open container, it is best used within three weeks. In a closed container, it can typically last up to one year. However, agar-based media should never be stored below 0°C, as freezing can damage the gel structure. For long-term use, always seal the agar plates or store them in airtight containers to prevent drying out.
5. When re-melting solidified media after sterilization, it's recommended to use a water bath or circulating steam. Only melt the medium once, and then keep it in a 45–50°C water bath for no more than 8 hours to avoid degradation.
