Philips Electronics today announced a highly integrated, hybrid Nexperia TV520 reference design that delivers the industry's best LCD TV images at significantly lower cost. With this integrated, ready-to-produce design, customers can complete product designs and bring them to market in as little as three months. The high level of integration of this hybrid ATSC/DVB solution provides TV manufacturers with a simple design process that reduces material costs by up to 50% compared to other solutions. This new reference design supports both analog and digital TV broadcast standards and meets the demand for superior high-definition image quality and outstanding acoustics on small-screen LCD TVs at an unprecedented price.

The first two members of the TV520 reference design series are the TV520/20 and TV520/30. The TV520/20 reference design was developed for mainstream LCD displays, and the TV520/30 will complement it, enabling TV manufacturers to further improve image quality. All members of the family are fully compatible in pin layout, allowing TV designers to reuse existing results across a wide range of product designs. The TV520/20 system solution also includes a field-tested ATSC software stack and customization tools that enable TV manufacturers to streamline design cycles while delivering the industry's best image performance and automatic image control.

The TV520 reference design is based on the Nexperia family of PNX853X media processors that provide IP blocks for MPEG multiplexing and codec, video scaling, progressive scanning, noise reduction, all video functions, audio codecs, and digital modulo Conversion and audio capabilities. It also includes a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) and an SD/HD analog component input. The TV520 can also be upgraded to a high-end TV solution by simply adding some Philips related processors, such as the Nexperia PNX505X.

Using the TV520/20 system reference design will enable TV manufacturers to reduce material costs to less than $45 while meeting the required analog and digital processing capabilities.
