Original Title: Li Yanhong: Artificial Intelligence Cannot Exceed Human Capabilities
Li Yanhong, the founder, chairman, and CEO of Baidu, has long been a vocal advocate for the responsible development of artificial intelligence. In recent interviews, he emphasized that while AI will revolutionize many aspects of society, it will never surpass human capabilities. Instead, he sees AI as a powerful tool that can enhance human potential and drive innovation across industries.
As one of the first Chinese internet companies to invest heavily in AI, Li believes that the technology is still in its early stages and will take years—perhaps even decades—to fully mature. He stressed that AI's true power lies not in replacing humans, but in augmenting their abilities, especially in areas like facial recognition, speech processing, and natural language understanding.
"AI is a long-term journey," Li said during an interview with Beijing News. "It’s not just about creating smart machines; it's about transforming entire industries. From finance to transportation, from healthcare to education, AI has the potential to reshape how we live and work."
He also addressed concerns that AI might one day outperform humans. "I don’t believe AI will ever truly surpass human intelligence. But when it gets close, it can disrupt entire sectors. For example, airport security could be completely reimagined with advanced facial recognition systems, eliminating the need for manual checks and improving efficiency."
Baidu has taken a proactive approach by opening its deep learning platform to external developers, enabling smaller companies to leverage AI without needing massive infrastructure or technical expertise. When asked if this would create more competitors, Li responded with optimism: "Artificial intelligence is a huge industry, and no single company can do it all. By providing tools and platforms, we’re helping others build on top of our work, which ultimately benefits everyone."
Regarding autonomous driving, Li acknowledged that the technology is still in its infancy. "We have dozens of test vehicles, but none are commercially available yet. The path to full autonomy is a gradual process—from Level 1 to Level 5. There are still many challenges, especially in handling unpredictable real-world environments."
Looking ahead, Li pointed to China's strong position in AI. "We have a large market, a wealth of talent, and significant investment. No other country has a population of over 700 million internet users who share the same language, culture, and legal framework. This gives us a unique advantage in developing and deploying AI at scale."
In closing, Li emphasized the need for continuous innovation and collaboration. "The internet industry is changing rapidly, and we must find new ways to grow. AI is not just a trend—it’s the future. And the future belongs to those who embrace it with vision and responsibility."
