To measure current with a clamp meter, first, ensure you understand whether your clamp meter is AC-only or AC-DC capable. Always start with the highest range if unsure about the current level to prevent damaging the meter. Once you’ve zeroed the meter and selected the appropriate range, place the wire to be measured in the center of the clamp's jaws and close them. After taking the reading, set the range back to maximum to protect the meter for future use.
When using a clamp meter, ensure it’s in good condition—check for insulation integrity, flexible needle movement, and clean, rust-free jaws. For small currents, wind the wire several times around the jaws and divide the reading by the number of turns to get the accurate current. Ensure the jaws are tightly closed during measurement and clean any debris from the contact surfaces if there’s noise. Remember, the clamp meter measures only one phase conductor at a time, and the voltage of the circuit must not exceed the meter's rating.
When measuring the current of an operating cage asynchronous motor, you can assess its operational status. Measuring each phase individually can help identify any phase imbalances or overload issues. For safety, always adhere to proper precautions, especially when handling high-voltage circuits.
