According to recent reports from foreign media Android Headlines, Huawei has officially applied for a trademark registration for "Huawei Pay" with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). This suggests that Huawei may soon introduce its mobile payment service across the European continent, potentially expanding its digital payment solutions to various regions within Europe. While the service is currently available only in China, it seems Huawei is preparing to broaden its reach, possibly unveiling plans during the upcoming IFA event.
The trademark application was filed on August 29th, featuring the Huawei Pay logo along with specific color schemes. Although the application is still pending approval, industry experts believe it's highly likely to be granted. Establishing a comprehensive payment ecosystem, however, will require significant effort and time. Huawei will need to collaborate closely with banks and financial institutions to ensure compatibility and regulatory compliance. Initial rollouts are expected to focus on larger countries like Germany.
With competitors such as Android Pay and Samsung Pay already active in Europe, the introduction of Huawei Pay could intensify competition in the mobile payment sector. As noted by Richard Yu, Huawei's Consumer Business Group CEO, mobile payments are set to become an essential feature of smartphones in the near future. By integrating mobile devices with banking services, both user convenience and transaction security can be enhanced significantly.
Europe represents a crucial market for Huawei due to its strong presence among premium smartphone consumers. Achieving a stable market share exceeding 5% was a significant milestone for Huawei in Europe. Now, the company aims to double this figure to between 10% and 12%, marking a critical phase in solidifying its position.
Recent data shows that Huawei's smartphone sales grew 1.6 times faster internationally compared to domestically in the first half of 2016. Particularly in Spain, Huawei holds over 20% of the smartphone market share. Across Western Europe, Huawei’s total smartphone market share reached 11.6%, while commanding 14.3% of the premium segment priced between €500-€600.
As of June 2017, Huawei Pay had partnered with 51 domestic banks and supported 12 device models. With these developments, Huawei is positioning itself strongly to compete globally in the rapidly evolving mobile payment landscape.
