National Semiconductor Corporation (NS) announced the first product in a new line of Boomer® Class D audio amplifiers with built-in boost converters. This LM48510 audio amplifier has a built-in converter, so there is no need to add an external boost converter. Portable electronics developers using this amplifier to develop new products will ensure that the output power of the new product remains stable. In other words, even if the battery is gradually exhausted, the voltage will drop and the output power will remain stable at the previous high level.

National's new audio amplifier can increase the supply voltage of portable electronic products, so that the battery voltage will continue to fall due to long-term use, affecting system operation. The chip is extremely compact and is ideal for portable GPS, wireless handsets, portable media players, medical devices, audible fire alarm systems, and other battery-powered electronics. In addition, the LM48510 requires only a few external components, which significantly reduces board space compared to multi-chip solutions.

National's LM48510 chip can continuously output 1.2W with a 3V input voltage to drive 8W speakers. If this amplifier continuously outputs 1.7W of power and drives a 4W speaker load, its total harmonic distortion and noise (THD+N) will not exceed 1%.

In addition to its low-power shutdown mode, this Boomer amplifier also supports output short-circuit and thermal protection. In addition, the chip also has an advanced switching / switching noise suppression circuit that can suppress the output transient response generated by switching power supplies. The independent gain control of the LM48510 chip can be configured with a number of different external components.

The LM48510 is available in a 16-pin LLP® package with a 0.5mm pitch and is priced at $1.35 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
