Nokia enters virtual reality after losing mobile phone hegemony

Nokia is planning to return to the consumer market through an unexpected transition to virtual reality, with more inspiration from Star Wars than the smartphone business it once dominated.

The Finnish technology group will present its world's first real-time professional production equipment for immersive movies, TV and games on Wednesday, announcing its plans to enter the virtual reality gaming and entertainment market.

The dome camera, called Ozo, will be Nokia's first product line of media equipment and services. Ramzi Haidamus, president of Nokia's Silicon Valley subsidiary Nokia Technologies, said: "This represents Nokia's rebirth, which we have seen many times in 150 years of company history."

This will be Nokia's first consumer device since it sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft two years ago, but Nokia has agreed to license its tablet and technology to produce a tablet, and a similar line of branded smartphones.

There are many players in the virtual reality headset market, and Google, Facebook, Sony and HTC have all released competitive products, but they have been limited in terms of consumer use. These technology companies are betting on the potential size of this market, and many industry executives and analysts see the market as the future of home entertainment.

Nokia's goal is to fill the need for content for these devices with the first camera device. This camera will allow production companies to shoot and edit in real time to create 3D virtual reality scripts instead of stitching together various lenses.

Heidemus proposed the various uses of this camera, from entertainment and education to advertising and news.

For example, you can shoot news scripts during events such as demonstrations, which will give the audience a feeling of being in the crowd.

The camera was released in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Nokia will conduct the final test before the commercial release.
