Lasted for 10 years: China has discovered that the storage capacity of super-large phosphate rock is up to 801 million tons.

According to a recent report by CCTV News, exploration teams have made a significant discovery in Kaiyang County, Guizhou Province. They found an enormous deposit of phosphorite, with proven reserves totaling 801 million tons. This figure is equivalent to twice the entire phosphorite resource of China's largest Kaiyang Phosphate Mine over 22 years of operation. The exploration process for this site began more than a decade ago, but it wasn’t until recently that comprehensive assessments were completed. The phosphate rock spans nearly 50 square kilometers, with an average thickness of 5.49 meters and an average ore grade (P2O5) of 33.47%. High-grade phosphate ore was identified, with proven reserves reaching 8 billion tons. The deepest control point reaches 1629.4 meters, while the lowest control elevation of the phosphate layer is at -404.57 meters. Despite China’s current abundance of phosphate reserves, experts warn that if the current mining approach, often described as “exploiting the rich and discarding the poor,” persists, the nation’s phosphate ore could be completely depleted within two decades. China’s phosphate rock is primarily concentrated in five provinces: Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Hubei, and Hunan. Among these, Yunnan Province’s Kunyang boasts the richest phosphate mineral resources, with long-term reserves estimated at 20 billion tons. Kunyang ranks alongside the United States’ Florida, the Soviet Union’s Kola Peninsula, and Morocco in Africa as one of the “world’s four largest phosphate mines.” While this discovery in Guizhou is impressive, it underscores the urgent need for sustainable mining practices to preserve these vital resources for future generations. Otherwise, China risks exhausting its reserves sooner than anticipated, impacting industries reliant on phosphate fertilizers and other downstream products. Attached are some images showcasing the scale and significance of this discovery. [Images included] This development highlights the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship, especially when dealing with non-renewable resources like phosphate. As we continue to exploit these deposits, it’s crucial to adopt innovative techniques that maximize efficiency while minimizing waste. In conclusion, this massive find in Kaiyang County not only adds to China’s existing reserves but also serves as a wake-up call regarding the finite nature of our planet’s resources. Let’s hope this inspires renewed efforts toward conservation and smarter resource management strategies moving forward.
