Huawei officially released the bearer network requirements for VR services.

Recently, Huawei officially released the White Paper on Bearer Network Requirements for VR Services (hereinafter referred to as the “White Paper”). This white paper analyzes the requirements of VR for bearer network for the industry's hot business, Virtual Reality (VR), and points out the future development route and direction of the bearer network, aiming to promote the development of VR industry.

VR will become one of the important communication and entertainment methods in the future. It is called “Next Generation Internet” and “Next Generation Computing Platform” by the industry, and its application scenarios and development space are huge. VR has three main elements:

SpaTIal - The virtual environment information perceived by the user is a three-dimensional space, containing a large amount of information;

Interact - Users can interact with spatial data in the virtual environment and other users, and information forms connections and flows between users;

Real-time (Real-TIme) - The user's interaction in the virtual environment is real-time, requiring real-time information connection.

Based on the above three factors, no matter which VR application is converted into online application of the network, it involves the real-time connection and flow of massive information, which inevitably poses new challenges to the bearer network.

The white paper points out that large bandwidth, low latency, and on-demand networks are three important features that support VR bearers.

First of all, compared with traditional video, VR needs a larger and clearer picture. According to the rigorous calculation, analysis and testing of Huawei iLab Lab, only the full-screen 24K resolution VR can achieve the experience of ultra-high-definition TV. Of course, the improvement of VR image quality is also achieved in stages. The first is VR, the full screen resolution is 4K or lower, and the bandwidth is about 25Mbps. The second stage is the entry stage. The full screen resolution is 8K, which requires about 100Mbps. Bandwidth; the third phase is the advanced phase, the full-screen resolution is 12K, the frame rate is also increased to 60fps, and the bandwidth is about 400Mbps; the final is the extreme phase, the full-screen resolution is 24K or higher, and the 3D mode becomes mainstream, requiring at least 1Gbps of bandwidth can guarantee the experience.

Secondly, high resolution requires more image computing and processing capabilities, and VR cloud rendering will become an indispensable part of VR services, which places extremely high demands on network latency.

Finally, the huge traffic generated by VR bursts exacerbates the “tidal effect” of the network. Because the peak and average differences of network traffic are large, only the on-demand network can effectively protect the user experience. "On-demand" not only requires bandwidth and latency as needed, but also ensures "automatic energy savings" in the network.

According to the white paper, the network must evolve to low-power, large-capacity, architecture optimization, and capability-opening in order to support the rapid development of VR services. .
