The 69th Emmy Awards have just concluded their nominations, with three VR films making the cut for "Best Original Interactive Program," accounting for 60% of the award slots. While this might not be the first time VR films have been nominated for Emmys, the growing popularity of virtual reality content suggests we'll see even more VR works recognized in the future.
Among the shortlisted films is "Dear Angelica," a creation by Wesley Allsbrook and Saschka Unseld from the Story Studio. This piece made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and quickly grabbed the attention of both critics and audiences alike. Interestingly, this isn't the first time Story Studio has been on the Emmys radar. Last year, their VR film "Henry" took home the award for "Best Original Interactive Show," marking the first time a VR film had ever received such recognition.
Another contender is "Mission: iSS." This VR movie transports viewers to the International Space Station, offering a hands-on experience of what it’s like to live and work in a zero-gravity environment. Users learn everything from spacecraft docking to spacewalking. Of course, while the simulation may feel weightless, the real-world effects of gravity remain firmly intact for those wearing the VR headset.
Lastly, there's "The People’s House," a VR documentary produced by Canadian VR company Felix & Paul. Former U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama personally guide viewers through the White House, providing an exclusive look at spaces usually off-limits to the public. From the Oval Office to the private residential quarters and areas like the War Room, this documentary offers an unprecedented glimpse into one of the world’s most iconic residences.
As VR technology continues to evolve, it’s clear that these immersive experiences are pushing creative boundaries and capturing the imagination of global audiences. Whether it’s storytelling, education, or entertainment, VR is proving itself as a medium with limitless potential.
