Recently, Conexant Systems announced the launch of two new video decoders for personal video recorders (PVRs) to enable high-definition television (HDTV) programming using a set-top box (STB) to receive global networks. The highly integrated CX2427X is an advanced dual-channel video decoder that includes several features that guarantee superior performance, such as powerful processors and next-generation storage technologies. The device decodes two HDTV programs simultaneously and supports PVR devices on both TVs. In this way, each TV set does not require a dedicated STB receiver, allowing consumers to simultaneously watch or record four different programs on a TV in different rooms. The CX24500 is a single-channel video decoder designed for high-volume STB devices that support PVR. It shares a core architecture with the CX2427X, enabling manufacturers to cost-effectively leverage cross-platform software solutions for multiple market segments.

"Our new video decoding series delivers unparalleled performance and provides manufacturers and operators with single and dual HDTV receivers for broadcast networks," said Lewis Brewster, executive vice president and general manager of Conexant's Broadband Media Processors business. Economic solutions. Consumers will also benefit from the solution, because operators can get a cheaper set of STDs that support HD and PVR through the economic scale of the shared platform."

Based on the powerful ARM® 1176 processor, the CX2427X and CX24500 are the industry's most powerful single/dual video decoders. To further enhance performance, these devices also include a dual data rate memory (DDR2) interface with an integrated second layer (L2) cache of unified memory.

These devices have several integrated features that reduce bill of materials (BOM) costs, including three universal serial bus (USB) ports, integrated audio digital-to-analog converters (DACs), multiple video outputs, such as high-bandwidth digital content Protected (HDCP) 1.2-capable High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 1.3 and two Media Independent Interface (MII)-based Ethernet Media Access Controllers (MACs). This will help future expansion of network technologies such as Homeplus® A/V, MoCA or 802.11 wireless networks.

The new HDTV video decoder family also features two Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA-2) interfaces, including external Accessories with Esata-2 for cost-effective user upgrades. This high-speed second-generation interface improves output performance, which is especially important for PVR devices. In addition, the integrated V.29 hardware modem provides broadcasters with a high-performance, cost-effective solution for back-channel communication without the need to modify the software.

The flexible and multi-format CX2427X and CX24500 support major video compression standards including MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC)/H.264 and VC-1. These technologies can significantly improve bandwidth utilization and help service providers deliver more HD content using existing architectures.

The decoder offers maximum design flexibility to support a wide range of voice standards including aac, aacPlusTM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus® and Microsoft's WMA Pro. The device also supports global broadcast formats, including NTSC, PAL, SECAM, and a variety of operating systems including Nucleus+, Linux®, and Windows® CE.

Other features include the latest advanced security technologies that significantly improve broadcasters' ability to prevent their services from being stolen. Service providers can also personalize specific STBs with unique numbers and keys to ensure that these receivers are only available when deployed on their network.

Samples of the CX2427X and CX24500 are available now and are scheduled for volume production in the third quarter of 2007. The CX2427X is available in a 913-pin ball grid array (BGA) package and is priced at $40 in volume. The CX24500 is available in a 736-pin BGA package and is priced at $30 in volume. A range of operating systems, middleware, drives and development tools bundled to help manufacturers reduce costs and speed time to market are also available.
