At the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2018) in the U.S., Samsung made a big splash by unveiling its first micro-LED TV, named “The Wall.†This massive display measures 146 inches diagonally, which is eight times the area of a standard 55-inch TV, and features a 4K resolution. While specific technical details remain limited, on-site reporters at CES noted that the screen appears nearly seamless, offering an impressive visual experience.
Samsung announced that the TV would be available in 2018, but no exact pricing or release date was provided. It’s also unclear if the product will come in different sizes or configurations. However, the company has clearly positioned this as a major step forward in high-end television technology.
This move comes as Samsung seeks to regain its edge in the premium TV market. In recent years, its QLED TVs have struggled to match the performance of LG Display’s OLED models, leading to a significant drop in market share—from 57% in 2015 to just 20% in 2016. Meanwhile, LGD increased its share from 17.5% to 43% during the same period. To stay competitive, Samsung has been exploring various options for its micro-LED project, including the acquisition of PlayNitride, a Taiwanese startup specializing in micro-LED technology.
Industry experts believe that Samsung's investment in micro-LED could accelerate the growth of this emerging technology. While Sony introduced the world’s first micro-LED TV back in 2012 with a 55-inch Full HD Crystal-LED panel, it never brought the technology to market for consumer TVs. Instead, Sony focused on large-scale outdoor displays. Now, with Samsung taking a bold step, the future of micro-LED in home entertainment looks more promising than ever.
