At the recent CES 2018 event in the United States, Samsung unveiled its groundbreaking micro-LED TV called “The Wall.†This massive display measures 146 inches diagonally, offering an area eight times larger than a standard 55-inch TV. With a 4K resolution, it promises sharp and vivid visuals. Although specific technical details remain scarce, on-site reporters at CES noted that the screen delivers an almost seamless viewing experience, with minimal visible gaps between the individual LED tiles.
Samsung announced that the “The Wall†will be available in 2018, but no official pricing or release date has been revealed yet. It's also unclear if the company plans to offer different sizes or custom configurations for consumers. This move is seen as part of Samsung’s broader strategy to regain its edge in the high-end television market, where it has faced increasing competition from LG’s OLED TVs.
In 2015, Samsung held a 57% share in the premium TV segment, but by 2016, that dropped to just 20%, while LG’s share rose from 17.5% to 43% during the same period. To stay ahead, Samsung has been exploring various alternatives for its micro-LED technology. One notable step was the acquisition of PlayNitride, a Taiwanese startup specializing in micro-LEDs, which could accelerate Samsung’s development in this space.
Industry experts believe that Samsung’s investment in micro-LED could significantly boost the entire industry. While Sony introduced the first micro-LED TV back in 2012 with its 55-inch Crystal-LED panel, it never commercialized the technology for consumer TVs. Instead, Sony focused on large-scale outdoor displays using the same micro-LED technology. Now, with Samsung stepping in, the future of micro-LED in home entertainment looks more promising than ever.
