Catalyst Introduces 500mA Inductive LED Driver for Camera/Flash Mode

CAT4134 offers fully integrated camera/flash mode switching to reduce peripheral components Catalyst Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: CATS) announced the introduction of a high power, 500mA inductive boost LED driver for imaging/flash mode applications. The new CAT4134 chip integrates full camera/flash switching, allowing designers to precisely set the desired flash and camera modes with a single resistor to minimize the need for external components. The CAT4134 can drive up to six white/color LEDs, providing an efficient and simplified design for industrial video lighting, digital cameras, flash, LCD backlighting and Other high power LED applications. Catalyst Semiconductor's new inductive boost LED driver includes matched dual output channels for maximum output current up to 500mA, and the output current can be controlled by RSET or RFLASH resistors. When the flash input pin is low (camera mode), the LED current is determined by RSET; when the flash input pin is high (flash mode), the LED current is determined by the RFLASH resistor. Each channel drives the brightness of one to three white LEDs connected in series in a constant current manner. The CAT4134 can support input voltages as low as 3V, making it ideal for use in lithium battery powered products. High frequency and low noise operation allows the CAT4134 to maintain good efficiency (up to 85%) with small inductors and ceramic capacitors, making it ideal for applications where space and power requirements are critical. By setting the shutdown-down pin, the CAT4134 can be put into a "zero current" static mode, which further reduces battery drain. In addition, the CAT4134's soft-start control and current limit feature provide short-circuit and over-temperature protection. A specific overvoltage protection (OVP) pin allows the user to set the maximum output voltage of the output port. Scott Brown, vice president of marketing at Catalyst Semiconductor, said, "Our CAT4134, the inductive LED driver, echoes our recently announced charge pump device, Quad-Mode(tm) CAT3636, further emphasizing Catalyst. Semiconductors are committed to providing a variety of LED drive technologies. As each customer has its own unique system design goals, Catalyst Semiconductor's strategy is to provide both inductive and charge pump architectures for different customer application needs. The best solution.” CAT4134 product features camera and flash mode operation fully integrated and adjustable camera / flash LED drive current output channel can drive 2, 3, 4 or 6 LED lights LED high current drive (maximum per channel 250mA) Power Efficiency Up to 85% 12-Pin TDFN 3mm x 3mm Package
