With the growing popularity of smartphones and the enhanced capabilities of their camera functions, an increasing number of users have reported that displays equipped with dual-latch ICs often perform poorly when photographed. JiChuang North’s cost-effective PWM IC series, ICN205X, addresses this issue effectively. It ensures that the display maintains excellent visual quality even under the camera lens. But how exactly does ICN205X enhance photo quality compared to dual-latch ICs? Let's explore this through a series of tests.
We utilized popular rental P4.81 indoor and outdoor general-purpose products as our testing platform to compare the photographic effects of leading dual-latch ICs and ICN205X. To ensure fairness and objectivity, we adjusted the brightness and color temperature to match exactly and compared photos taken at various shutter speeds. All images in this article are presented in their original form without any post-processing.
| Application Scenario | Brightness Range | Camera Shutter Range |
|-----------------------|------------------|----------------------|
| Indoor Studio | 500-800cd | 1/100-1/300 S |
| Indoor Stage | 800-1200cd | 1/400-1/600 S |
| Semi-Outdoor Stage | 3000-4000cd | 1/800-1/1500 S |
| Outdoor Sports, Advertising | 6000-8000cd | <1/2000 S |
**Portrait Comparison**

Figure 2: At 1/500 shutter speed, the left image uses a dual-latch IC, while the right uses ICN205X.

Figure 3: At 1/1000 shutter speed, the left image uses a dual-latch IC, while the right uses ICN205X.

Figure 4: At 1/2000 shutter speed, the left image uses a dual-latch IC, while the right uses ICN205X.

Figure 5: At 1/200 shutter speed, the left image uses a dual-latch IC, while the right uses ICN205X.

Figure 6: At 1/500 shutter speed, the left image uses a dual-latch IC, while the right uses ICN205X.

Figure 7: At 1/1000 shutter speed, the left image uses a dual-latch IC, while the right uses ICN205X.

Figure 8: At 1/2000 shutter speed, the left image uses a dual-latch IC, while the right uses ICN205X.
From these test results, we can conclude:
1. Despite achieving a refresh rate of 1920 or higher, dual-latch products begin to show deterioration in photo quality at a 1/200 shutter speed, and anything beyond 1/500 becomes entirely unusable.
2. Some photos from the dual-latch product lack scan lines, suggesting sufficient refresh rates, yet they still exhibit significant display distortion (Figures 2 and 6).
3. The quality of images captured by the PWM IC at 1/2000 shutter speed remains acceptable.
**Gray Scale Performance Comparison**
In addition to superior camera performance, PWM ICs also outperform dual-latch ICs in grayscale performance when brightness is reduced.

Figure 9: Brightness reduced to 50%, the left side uses a dual-latch IC, while the right side uses ICN205X.
Beyond these comparisons, PWM ICs offer additional benefits:
1. They support a large number of loaded points without any performance degradation.
2. They operate at lower data clock speeds, improving EMI performance.
3. They eliminate open crosstalk.
4. They allow for a wide range of current gain adjustments.
The LED display industry has been in the full-color era for over 20 years, with driver ICs playing a crucial role in display quality. These ICs have evolved through two major stages: universal constant current and PWM constant current. While PWM constant current ICs provide superior display effects, they come at a high cost. To cater to customer demands for higher refresh rates without excessive cost, dual-latch products emerged and quickly became dominant in the mid-range market. However, users often misinterpret the doubled refresh rate numbers displayed on software interfaces as improved photo quality, which is not always true. ICN205X now revolutionizes the industry by ushering in the PWM era, leaving dual-latch products confined to the lowest-end market. PWM technology is set to define performance standards. Embrace the new era of LED displays!
