SC442 can drive 120 white LEDs

Semtech, a mixed-signal semi-conductor supplier, recently announced the SC442, the company's first 10-channel white LED driver integrated with a 3A boost power switch. The device is available in an ultra-small, ultra-thin 4x4x0.6mm 28-pin MLPQ package capable of driving up to 120 LEDs with up to 30mA per channel. It features a high-density package, a small external filter element, and a wide operating voltage range. , And high-efficiency features to meet the space constraints of LED-backlit LCD monitors and LCD TVs. High-density LED drivers are also well-suited for ultra-bright displays with brightness levels above 500 nits, used in the medical, industrial, aerospace and navigation markets, and digital signage applications.

The device expands the SC44x family of LED drivers that have been popularized by SST and can be adapted to large LCD backlight applications. The SC442's wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 21V allows use of Li-Ion battery packs or 5V, 12V, or 18V regulated power supplies. The SC442 can output up to 42V and drives up to 12 white LEDs per channel. The device is compatible with step-up or SEPIC (boost/buck) topologies. In addition, when the input voltage is greater than the output voltage, it can seamlessly switch to bypass (or linear) mode. Its synchronization function eliminates intermodulation noise that occurs in backlight systems that use multiple driver ICs (such as LED-backlit large LCD TVs). Other features include overheating, overload, open-LED protection, and programmable LED short-circuit protection.

Steve Hawley, Product Marketing Manager for LED Lighting and Display at Scitech, said: “LCD system designers are looking for the largest and brightest viewing area, minimizing the impact on case size and system heating. SC442 is the next generation Format, high-brightness LCD displays provide high brightness, low loss and small size solutions."
